Cassidy and DJ’s story started in June 2022 on a dating app. Cassidy was living in Atlanta at the time, just in Augusta for a single day to watch a cycling event. Somehow, her profile appeared on DJ’s app during that brief visit, and he swiped right. “I didn’t even see the match until I was back in Atlanta! It felt like fate had intervened. Out of all the days and places, our lives crossed paths in that tiny window of time,” Cassidy shares.
The proposal happened at Boeckh Park in North Augusta, South Carolina, just across the Savannah River. The spot was quiet and beautiful, exactly the kind of place she loved. But she had no idea what DJ had planned.
“DJ told me we were getting professional photos taken to celebrate our three-year anniversary, a believable story since I had been asking for photos for months,” she said. “What I didn’t know was that the ‘photo session’ was simply a cover for the moment that would change our lives forever.”
What she also didn’t know was that DJ had been planning this for a long time. “A year earlier, on our two-year anniversary, DJ had gifted me a ‘proposal prep box’ filled with flash cards where I wrote down my hopes for a proposal: private, intimate, and followed by a celebration with loved ones. He remembered every detail and honored every wish.”
When that moment finally came, Cassidy remembers feeling a rush of everything all at once. “Every single emotion all at once! Shock, joy, disbelief, pure love,” she recalled. “My first reaction when he dropped to one knee was blurting out, ‘What are you doing?!’ before ugly crying with happy tears.”
“I couldn’t even get words out,” she added, “just nods and smiles through tears.”
Later, learning that DJ had asked her dad for his blessing back in time, and that he had carefully orchestrated every step of the surprise, only deepened her love. “The planning process wasn’t just about the proposal,” she said. “It was about how well he knows me, listens to me, and creates moments that honor our story.”
The story of the ring was its own little adventure. In July 2025, during one of their bi-weekly date nights, DJ took her to a local jewelry store to try on engagement rings. “That day we discovered together what styles we both loved,” she said. “It was important to me that DJ liked the ring just as much as I did. I wanted him to enjoy seeing it on my finger as much as I loved wearing it.”
They realized they were both drawn to halos and pavé bands. “I was torn between an oval or radiant cut, and unsure about solitaire versus three-stone,” she admitted. “It was such a relief to narrow it down as a team, but I told DJ I wanted him to have the final say so that the ring would still feel like a surprise. He absolutely nailed it.” He went with a yellow gold setting, an oval center stone with a halo with a pavé band. “The halo, the pavé—it’s everything I had dreamed of and more,” she shared.
She remembered joking with him earlier: “I wanted something big and sparkly enough that someone across the room could see I’m happily married. He delivered, and I’m still in love with it every time I look down at my hand.”
If there ever was such a thing as the ring of the moment, this one surely is.
Engagement shifted their relationship in ways she didn’t expect. “It feels different,” she admitted. “Like the day before, we were boyfriend and girlfriend, and now we’re truly building a life together as fiancés. The engagement and ring are more than just symbols; they carry weight, commitment, and joy. It feels more serious, in the best way possible. This is us saying, ‘We’re all in.’”
When asked to sum up their love in three words, she chose these three: “Unexpected. Intentional. Forever.”
Her advice for other couples is grounded and real: “Show effort early and often. Relationships thrive when effort never stops.”
She shared that they built traditions early on, like alternating weekly date nights, going to the gym together and cooking dinner side by side. “Now, those little rituals are part of our routine and part of the foundation we’re building for a lifetime together.”
The small, ordinary moments matter the most. “Whether we’re folding laundry, cooking dinner, or watching Harry Potter curled up with our three dogs, we find joy in the everyday moments,” she said. “That’s what makes love last.”
